Sir John, executed 1746 |
A History of the Wedderburn name |
Sir David, Bart., MP |

The Wedderburns are one of the oldest and most illustrious of Scottish families. But do you know, for instance, that the earliest documented reference to them is in the Ragman Roll of 1296 when Baron Walter de Wedderburn swore fealty to King Edward I of England?
And do you know who wrote the famous ‘Gude and Godlie Ballads’? — or anything of the history of James Wedderburn, Baron Drumdrennane, Dean of the Chapel Royal and Bishop of Dunblane? Do you know which of the Wedderburns was the friend and secretary of James VI of Scotland? Do you know what happened to some of the Wedderburns after Culloden? Do you know why Sir John Wedderburn, fifth baronet of Blackness, was executed on Kennington Common in 1746? Do you know anything about the Wedderburn involvement with the island of Jamaica? Have you ever heard of Alexander Wedderburn, Lord Loughborough and Earl of Rosslyn? — or of his work as Lord Chancellor of Great Britain? What do you know about the history of The Hereditary Royal Standard Bearers of Scotland? — and who were they?

I have been researching my own ancestry, not because I'm on the hunt for any ‘Blue Blood,’ but because I'm interested in where my ancestors came from, what they did, and what they contributed to the history and society of this and other countries.
During the course of my research I consulted a large quantity of family records, old documents, and books—many of which are of general interest to the members of the family as a whole, but are often difficult to find and consult.
I have, therefore, decided to publish, (for private distribution only, at present), the history of the family and our name as it appeared in the Introductory Chapter of Alexander Wedderburn’s huge two-volume work, THE WEDDERBURN BOOK, published privately in 1898. This is now one of the most famous genealogical histories on record, and it covers the period 1296—1896.

This new publication of the Introductory History of THE WEDDERBURN BOOK is printed in A4 format, following the style of the 1898 edition. It contains reproductions of portraits and facsimiles of documents, and is ‘heat-bound’ in special protective covers.
The price of this book is £21.50 including postage and packing within the UK. For all other countries the inclusive price is £25.00. |

A brief comment by the webmaster
The introductory chapter to the Wedderburn Book is a remarkably detailed, fascinating, informative expose of the family and its history, back to the first known occurrence of the name in 1296. This publication includes, in addition to the original text, a number of reproductions of signatures, portraits and letters (see example), a copy of the original preface, and a long article about the history of the family, reviewing the original publication, from the 'Dundee Advertiser' of July 27th and August 3rd 1899. A4 sized, the publication follows the layout of the original text format. (78 pages)
